Description
Experience Level: Expert
Our apparel website, www.universityofwhatever.co.uk, is being updated and we're going multilingual - German, French, Italian, Spanish and potentially in the future other European languages. This includes generic website text, promotional and branding text, as well as individual product and range descriptions.
In our copy we take a very colloquial, informal style to appeal to our customers. Whilst there is some industry-specific vocabulary, the majority of the text to be translated is branding-related. We would prefer creative native speakers who understand our brand message and will translate the force and intention of our branding rather than literal, word-by-word translations which risk losing relevance. As such, you would be given some freedom to adapt the text to make it more culturally specific where appropriate, and we look forward to hearing your feedback on this.
To give you a feel for our brand and the style of our language, here is an excerpt from the About Us section that will be included in the translation document:
Born out of the more.. questionable.. aspects of the student lifestyle, the University of Whatever celebrates the student philosophy of Lazy Days and Messy Nights - a philosophy as close to your heart as it is ours.
It's from the Great British tradition of getting the most out of life that I, the UOW Dean, drew the University of Whatever mantra:
Be proud of who we are, not what we pretend to be
Relax whenever possible, for as long as possible
Have fun, after all, it's what life's about
You'll probably agree that it's that simple. You don't need to be a sun-kissed surfer, an aristocrat's pampered princess, or a stacked underwear model, despite what other brands might want you to believe..
The text is currently about 4,000 words, and we have split it into a spreadsheet (.xls) with the smaller text and a text document (.doc) with the larger pieces of copy. Please make quotes based on this assumption.
I also work as the brand manager for a number of other brands looking to expand their e-commerce in Europe and use PPH for much of my outsourcing. If I find a reliable and quality translator for this project it is highly likely I will work with you again.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
