SEO advice for marketing consultancy

We are a specialist marketing consultancy. Currently a Google search for our company's name (the shortened version by which clients know us) doesn't even get us to p. 25 of the organic listings. We need advice on practical steps we could take to change this (or possibly to tell us that significantly improving our ranking would involve too much cost & effort). Also interested in whether buying domain names featuring our company name would help our SEO.
