Navigational /Filter Widget
This area needs redesigning to make it feel a more integrated part of the website. It is the ‘central hub’ to navigate and filter through product selections and should feel like a more intuitive, easy to use, integrated navigation.
Currently the general feedback is that it’s hard to follow, looks cluttered, and looks like it’s just been put there without any kind of foundation.
Whilst this is the default navigation tool that we would like our customers to use, there are some which prefer the standard dropdown menu navigation. As you can see, we feature this navigation in our header also. There needs to be a methodology of closing/collapsing the navigation widget for those that would rather use the dropdown menu.
Currently we have what we have called ‘a pawprint’ logo, which collapses the widget and is then able to be re-opened from the same icon in the header area. We have received a lot of feedback that this is confusing/not intuitive, and that its unclear what it does, or why a user should click on it. This functionality needs to be rethought too.
If you look at the existing implementation (www.getgeared.co.uk) and the new implementation (www.bikeaholic.uk) - you can see the differences.
The feedback we have obtained on the new version (bikeaholic.uk) is that the widget needs some kind of ‘footer’ to separate navigation from content.
As you will see the new version also incorporates the ‘filters’ beneath the widget. This is a required improvement on the old version, and needs to remain, but the fact that it makes the height of the widget area so big is a problem in the current design.
The job is to design a mock-up of a solution, with an explanatory narrative of how things like the collapsing of the widget would work.
A separate follow on job may be to then provide the necessary CSS and/or html to make the required changes, but that will be offered as a separate job to you if we like the design/concept.
