Create configurable word cloud web application

I need a web based application to create word clouds - this site is obviously the gold standard:

https://wordart.com/create - however we do not need ALL the features here, or even an especially nice GUI (although a basic GUI would be a bonus) just an application that can be fed criteria (shape template - word list - other settings) via an API, and display an image. This is a BACKEND ONLY project.

I have tried to do this myself with javascript libraries, d3.js etc, but have not been successful. I have used a JAVA "WordCram" application but this is slow and I have not been able to port it to a web application. I mention this all so that you may have some good starting points, hopefully!
