Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Estimated project duration: 1 - 2 weeks
General information for the business: We provide web-based systems, supporting teaching and learning across Europe
Description of requirements/functionality: The following functionality is required, which cannot be achieved with any existing Excel function:
1. The user should be able to select multiple cells whose content they wish to combine
2. The user should be able to press a ‘Combine’ button in the Excel tool bar, which prompts them to select a target cell
3. The contents of the cells selected in step 1 should be combined (left to right, then top to bottom) and inserted into the cell selected in step 2, with all text formatting preserved (e.g. bold, italic, underline etc.)
For example: If the user selects cells A3, A4, D3 and D4, the text of each of these cells will combined in the order A3, D3, A4, D4.
This video: https://www.dropbox.com/s/50l5za1jmoy1ao5/combine-video.swf and spreadsheet: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0n212unqy6zydno/combine-example.xlsx provide an example of how this should work.
4. A second, ‘Combine to Bottom’ button should be provided, which replicates the above process, and then repeats the process to the bottom of the spreadsheet.
The repeat process should start at the row immediately below the cells that the user selected in step 1.
For example:
* If the user selects cells A3, A4, D3 and D4 and presses the ‘Combine to Bottom’ button, they are prompted to select a target cell and they choose cell E3
* Once the contents of cells A3, A4, D3 and D4 has been combined and added to cell E3, the function repeats the process with the cells immediately below the initial selection, so it would move on to combine cells A5, D5, A6 and D6 into cell E5
* This process repeats until the bottom of the spreadsheet is reached
The script/extension should work in Microsoft Excel 2010 and above.
Specific technologies required: Microsoft Excel, VBA, Visual Basic for Applications
OS requirements: Windows
