Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
I have previously worked with a coder hired from this site to design some simple apps to read, sort, and alter information from an online poker hand history for the purposes of data-mining and player analysis. A "hand history" is a text record generated by an online poker site (sample attached) that contains the actions and results from every single hand that is dealt, including the player names, the amount bet and won/lost, as well as the board cards and winning and losing hands. (iPad edit note [cant scroll down!]: knowledge of postgre.sql huge +)
The previous coder has done some excellent work on several simple scripts that change information on these files as well as search for files containing specific information for purposes extremely hard to explain briefly, but anyone interested in taking the job is entitled to be confused by :). He used .net to create them, and although fully functional on their own, I had decided to combine them into a full fledged program with additional features added, meaning that approximately 60-75% of the "difficult" work has already been completed.
Although we had a good relationship and he did excellent work, he was unable to continue with the project due to work/family conflicts. I have all the apps necessary for reverse engineering, as well as a complete graphical mock-up of the application, including a 9 page manual of the details and features attached to this job inquiry. Since these materials were originally created for the first coder, additional information will be provided to bring the new developer up to speed.
*Note: this project DOES NOT in any way involve the creation or alteration of actual poker software (such as PokerStars.com), nor does it involve anything used or intended for the purposes of aiding in actual poker decisions in real time or anything else that can in any way be construed as cheating. The purpose is to manage and sort text files for offline player analysis, with the hand histories used being the property of the player, saved on the player's hard drive during play. The functions this will accomplish are fully allowable by the poker sites themselves, and performs similar features such as those found in the popular and explicitly allowable programs like http://holdemmanager.com and http://pokertracker.com
All respondents should have at least a minimal functional knowledge of poker, specifically Texas Hold'em. You don't need to be an expert or even a winning player, but I will be forced to fire anyone on the spot who is charging me $20/hr to explain that a flush loses to a full house ;). Anyone chosen will get some interesting insights into the mind of a professional player, as well as obtaining some real eye-opening information as to the complexities of the game as a bonus!
