I would like to have 1 or more Raspberry Pi's set up to record to a spreadsheet car number plates that enter an area. They should be able to do this in low light. I would like this done in python. Each Raspberry pi can be stand alone, but possibly link to the same database/spreadsheet. The Pi and camera will be put in its own housing to protect it from the elements. It can be hard wired, or use wifi to connect to the main computer.

Interesting project. If the PI is hard wired or connected via wifi, you only need to take the photos and send those to the main computer which should do the work to collect the images, read/record the number plates etc? In this case the Pi (or camera) just needs to take photos and send them. The software to do the work may be easier to write for a standard desktop?
Keith C.15 Feb 2018Thats a fair point. Would you say that it could be scalable like this? If I wanted to clone the Pi to add more cameras, would it be easy?
