Extra notes: The BBC publishes an RSS feed of news items (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/help/rss/default.stm). We wish to set up a team of homeworkers to go through the items and assess how favourable or unfavourable they may be for 5 nominated people in politics. Each week an Excel workbook will be sent to a team of coders who will assess the items concerned. This project is to add some features to an example workbook to help coders undertake the work concerned.
The attached Excel Workbook, “PPH014-007_BBCNEWS_141110-141114.xlsm”, is the example. It has three functional worksheets: ‘Command’, ‘News_items’ and ‘Assessments’ and a ‘User form’ worksheet. ‘Command’ has some settings and two buttons, Build & Submit.
The ‘News_items’ worksheet lists a number of news items about politics and politicians which we are going to ask coders to assess. The ‘Assessments’ worksheet contains the results of their assessments. The PPH project is to create a User Form and the VBA that operates it. The additional worksheet, ‘User form’, indicates how User form might be laid out. It is a guide only. The Build button should invoke User form and the Submit button should send a copy of the workbook to xps@x-mr.com.
On opening the Excel workbook it should display the ‘Command’ worksheet which, in addition to the Build and Submit buttons, contains other information that can be seen in the attached xlsm file (also shown in Appendix A of the .docx version of this specification. This worksheet contains a box, “items to be coded” which is the number of News_items without a ‘Y’ in the first column of the News items. This value is displayed in the yellow box.
Pressing Build does the following:
• Creates an instance of ‘User Form’ using key words and assessment labels in the ‘Command’ worksheet.
• Finds the first entry in ‘News_items’ that has not been fully assessed and opens ‘User form’ which is then populated with the entries from the relevant ‘News_items’ line.
Now ‘User form’ is displayed showing the First, Next, Previous, Last, Update & Exit command buttons. The first four enable a Coder to navigate through the lines in the ‘News_items’ worksheet. In the example of the User form shown in the attached workbook (Also in Appendix A of the .docx copy), certain fields are greyed or blued out. The “title” and “Description” fields take their texts from the ‘New_items’ worksheet. The “full text” is in a browser text box and displays text to which the “Link” field points. This “full text” must be searched to provide the number of references (if any) to each of the politicians as well as the total number of lines. This is done every time the displayed item changes.
The Coder can now select one of the radio button choices for each politician. Whenever this is done, the orange bar in the Done row under the politician concerned changes from orange to green. When they are all green, the Code can press Update which writes the ratings for each of the politicians the next position in the ‘Assessments’ worksheet following fields:
ID, Publication time, Source, Title, Coder, Submitted, Key word, Mentions, Assessment
The Coder continues through all of the ‘News_items’ lines selecting one radio button for each politician. When all five are done, the Coder can press Update and five lines are then written to the ‘Assessments’ worksheet. When all of the items have been coded, the user may press Exit and is then returned to the ‘Command’ worksheet.
