General information for the business: We provide the NHS with free PDF analyses of their published data, and want to create summary PDFs for each organisation
Description of requirements/functionality: We require an Automator for Mac workflow, for our own back-office use, which combines PDF documents in batches. We anticipate this will require a script to be written and included in the workflow. The workflow should:
1) Allows the user to select a folder containing several thousand PDF documents (or to select all the files within that folder if that is easier). The documents in the folder can be assumed to be sorted in alphabetical ascending order by filename.
The filename of each PDF document begins with a short string (usually 3-6 alphanumeric characters) representing an NHS organisation code, followed by a dash, followed by further characters (including further dashes) and the .pdf file extension. For instance RQM is the NHS organisation code in the example filenames below:
RQM-RTT-130-Ophthalmology.pdf
RQM-RTT-999-All-specialties.pdf
2) Creates, for each of the several hundred different NHS organisation codes, a PDF document which combines all the PDF pages for that organisation code. The pages in each combined document should be sorted in alphabetical ascending order by original filename, i.e. in the same order that they appeared in the original folder.
3) Saves each of the combined PDF documents in the same folder as the originals (or saves them elsewhere and then moves them into the original folder at the end, if that is easier). The filename of each combined PDF document should comprise the NHS organisation code followed by "--ALL-FILES.pdf". For instance the two files listed above would be combined into a two-page PDF called:
RQM--ALL-FILES.pdf
A short example of a folder of PDFs, and the desired finished result, can be downloaded from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dcgm1dtt0jkl0x1/AACxHFAYlEwBbAJyXqYOgaBSa?dl=0
The Mac we need the workflow for is an iMac 27-inch late 2013 model, running macOS High Sierra v10.13.2 and Automator v2.8
Specific technologies required: macOS High Sierra v10.13.2 running Automator v2.8
OS requirements: Mac OS

Hello Rob,
Can you please confirm if a Electron based Desktop based application would work for you?Rob F.02 Jan 2018I'm afraid I don't know what that is! If it's easy to install and run on a Mac, and doesn't create any problems or incur ongoing costs, then I'm willing to consider it.

Do all PDFs have the same page layout (portrait or landscape) or does it vary?
