Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Analysis of communication signals originating from unknown or partially known sources with the purpose of identifying the transmission parameters specific to the employed transmitter has been a popular research area with widespread applications. The scope of this task, commonly referred to as signal identification, may range from identifying individual signal parameters such as the carrier frequency, bandwidth, modulation type, coding scheme, frequency spreading method, or the number of carriers, to the identification of the communication standard employed in the transmission, depending on the application. Signal identification has traditionally found application in the military context, where the detection, analysis and identification of unknown signals from potentially hostile communication sources is a vital task in signal interception, radio surveillance, interference identification and mitigation, and electronic warfare. In the commercial context, cognitive radio can be counted as one of the newest and most interesting application areas of signal identification systems.
The aim of this project is to develop a signal identification system that is capable of performing signal identification in a frequency band where multiple narrowband communication signals are present. The task of the signal identification system will be to detect the number of narrowband communication signals, and to extract relevant transmission parameters of each source, such as the carrier frequency, bandwidth, symbol rate and the modulation type
