Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Hi all,
I own a small CAD drawing company but require a simple but elegant database for a number of task using MS Access or equivalent. I have a some experience with building access databases but this is out of my skill set so i would like to open it up to people that know what they are doing.
key points of the database required.
1. Ideally it would be hosted on a internet connection- meaning where ever designers or my collegues work from we can access it with a log in porthole- then update, edit and add to the database content.
2. It will be used for engineering cad drawings - so it will need to handle pdf files, dwg/dxf files- with the future in mind it would be able handle models aswell - but not crucial at this stage. (why i say this is the file sizes can be quite large with high res pdfs etc...).
3. it needs to have status control - its proposed that clients will beable to log into this database and view/see/contribute to only the information relevant to there projects. other projects with other clients they will not be able to see/access or view.
4. As its a drawing database it needs to have revision control and action control for the drawings (approval, not approved, mark-ups, issuse to client/design manger etc...) to and from clients but also work collegues working in the office etc... sending emails and notifications to people involved in the project notifying them an action needs to be taken on the database site.
5. the database must produce reports for tracking revision history of the documents but also to view the design cycle of the drawings- when they were issused and to who they were issused etc.... this means that we must have a system where by old drawings in the workflow can not be issued but can still be viewed.
6. Most importantly we would like it to be dynamic from a top level position where by managers can set up new projects and details of the clients/projects and the work flow will follow on from this. its probably worth noting that users added to the database will be given permission to allow what they can do- eg we wouldnt want a client beable to delete information but only contribute, or we wouldn't want a cad designer that contributes to the database being able to set-up new project information when its there managers responsibility to do that.
As you can see this is lot of information to take on board and i have tried to explain bits it in little detail- but to help with this im working on some storyboards and will add to this feed when i have finished them.
please get in contact with me for more information and to discuss this project.
best regards,
david

Hi David,
Could you please advise the following: -
1) The typical size of a drawing and or image file
2) The approx. number that would be stored over a 12 month period
3) Do you have any web hosting service currently in place? If so do you have access to the control panel for it and what service do you have.
Kind regards,
Carl.
