Description
Experience Level: Entry
Project: Sky King – Upcoming Documentary
Location: Remote (UK or US-based preferred)
Duration: Initial 1-month trial, with potential to continue through crowdfunding and post-release
About the Project
Sky King is an upcoming documentary exploring a young man’s remarkable rise and tragic fall.
On 10 August 2018, Richard “Beebo” Russell, a 28-year-old ground service agent, took control of an empty passenger plane from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, flying it solo for over an hour before crashing on Ketron Island.
What followed was a media frenzy – headlines, hashtags, and tributes – but behind the story was a self-proclaimed “broken guy” battling unseen struggles with mental health.
Featuring interviews with loved ones, home videos, archive news footage, and the original air traffic control recordings, Sky King is a raw, heartfelt examination of the man behind the myth – and a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness.

The Role
We are looking for a social media manager to join our team on a monthly freelance basis to help grow the film’s online presence ahead of its Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.
The immediate goal is to build a large, engaged following before the campaign launches, drive sign-ups to our newsletter, and maintain momentum throughout the 30-day campaign.
If successful, this role may continue throughout production and post-release.
Platforms
We currently have pages set up for:
Facebook
Instagram
X (Twitter)
TikTok
YouTube
Reddit
Responsibilities
Create and publish 3–5 engaging posts per week on each platform (increasing during the 30-day campaign).
Develop and execute a content strategy leading up to the trailer launch, including a countdown and engagement posts.
Craft posts around themes such as:
Documentary updates
Mental health awareness
Beebo’s story (handled sensitively)
Kickstarter campaign updates
Filmmaking insights / behind-the-scenes
Engage with followers: reply to comments and messages, thank backers publicly, and interact with relevant mental health organisations and documentary pages.
Report or flag any negative or sensitive comments immediately.
Produce a weekly performance report, including follower growth, engagement metrics, and recommendations.
Collaborate closely with the director for content approvals and guidance.
Important Notes
You must have an understanding of mental health sensitivity — avoid glorifying suicide or using graphic details.
All posts directly referencing Richard (“Beebo”) must be cleared with the director before publishing.
Promote our partner mental health charity (TBC) once confirmed.
You Should Have
Proven experience managing social media for a film, creative project, or cause-driven campaign.
Excellent copywriting skills and a strong sense of storytelling.
Understanding of how to grow authentic engagement, not just followers.
Proficiency in creating and scheduling content using tools like Later, Buffer, or Meta Business Suite.
A creative eye for video editing or repurposing existing footage for reels and short-form content.
Payment
Paid monthly (rate to be discussed based on experience and scope).
Potential for ongoing collaboration after the documentary’s release.
Thank you for reading and look forward to hearing from you.
