Subway Art, a collaborative book by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, had a similar effect. It documents the early history of the New York City graffiti movement.
Published in 1984, the book has been described as "landmark photographic history". Known by many as 'the bible' of graffiti, Subway Art quickly acquired the dubious accolade of becoming one of the most stolen books in the United Kingdom.
It was huge not only in its impact but also in its physical form. Sales were slow to start with; the graffiti fraternity was stealing the book from bookshops in the same way they stole their paint from paint shops.
