Description
Experience Level: Expert
I’m after a rough idea of costs to create and publish an app for our small business, which is effectively a “shoot it yourself” wedding videography service.
The company is called Edit Your Wedding (http://www.edityourwedding.com). We send out small handheld video cameras (4-5) to wedding couples which they then distribute to their guests who film the day. They then send them back and we edit the footage.
The technology we use (Sony Bloggie handheld cameras) will only probably be usable for another year or so as it’s already been surpassed by the cameras contained within smartphones etc.
My aim is to remove the whole process of sending out cameras at all by creating an Edit Your Wedding App, which once the package has been purchased, the customer can download onto their smartphone. They would use the app to film the day and then when connected to a WiFi network would also be able to upload the footage to either an FTP server or amazon S3 bucket.
It would need a very simple, easy to use interface. I imagine a welcome screen that has two options - 1. Shoot Footage, 2. Upload Footage. And that would be it. That’s all they would be able to do, either film or upload.
I think the package would be purchased on our website, the customer could select the number of guests they wish to have film the wedding, and we would then manually send them an appropriate number of login codes for the app (the codes can only be used on one device). So I don't think any subscriptions or purchases are required within the app, just the ability for a user to log in with a unique code.
Additional ideas / thoughts:
The guest should be able to review clips they have shot and delete clips if required.
They should only be able to see videos that have been shot on their own device. They do not need to see other users videos.
The cameras we currently send out are able to record 2 hours worth of footage. I think it would be useful to limit the amount of footage that can be recorded / uploaded. And possibly also it would be useful to have some kind of warning message in the login process that will warn a user if they only have a limited amount of storage on their device - so that it is not a surprise during the wedding. Possibly we could also have an in-app purchase that would allow more shooting time to be added.
Both iOS & Android if possible.
Just smartphones, tablets not required.
Notifications: The app knows the date and time of the wedding and can offer notifications on the wedding day to remind guests to shoot. i.e "Don;'t forget to film the bride & groom", "Don't forget to shoot cutaways of the cake". This might help us obtain more useful footage.
Video recording would only be allowed in the app when the camera is orientated the correct way (i.e horizontal). This will prevent vertical video cips which are unusable.
Front menu could be the following: RECORD VIDEO / VIEW VIDEOS / UPLOAD VIDEO / TIPS & TRICKS. The last item would take the user to an area that offers advice on capturing a great videos.
Only upload when connec ted to WiFi (or at least warn the user about uploading using cellular data.
Videos to be uploaded to a S3 bucket if possible.
We should set a time limit to upload the videos, with reminders or notifications if they haven't done so. Perhaps 20 days after the wedding would be good.
Perhaps we could put a 30 min limit on any single clip?
Also, would there be a way of allowing the upload process to complete in the background even if the app is not actively open?
Videos are stored locally initially but then after the day of the wedding the user can press an "Upload" option that begins the process. Perhaps they can be prompted to do so in the days after the wedding when connected to wifi?
Ability to specify wedding date and time of ceremony in the backend within the codes would be useful. Messages on the run-up to the ceremony would be useful, in fact messages all day that remimnd the user to capture footage would be useful.
Video shooting only allowed in landscape mode
Please do get in touch for any further information.
Thanks
Mark

Hey Mark! Project sounds really interesting. Just wondering whether the website site (buying the package and getting sent an app login code) is already in place? Or are you hiring a web developer for this part? Or are you hoping the app developer can do this too? Thanks - Adam
