1930s
Fred & Nelly Eichner leave Germany for the UK where they meet and get married

1940s
Fred & Nelly set up home in East Grinstead and use their knowledge of languages to earn a living

1950-60s
The company they established was called Interlingua, which grew and through mergers and acquisitions, became a global player in the language industry.

1970s
With six other translation companies, Fred & Nelly form the Association of Translation Companies in February 1976, one of the world’s first representing translation companies

1980s
The ATC employs its first external consultancy to promote the use of professionally produced translations to aid UK exporters, attracting other translation companies to join them, increasing its energy and income to tackle issues of common concern

1990s
The ATC signs the declaration of intent to form the European Union of Associations of Translation Companies; it actively supports the establishment of both the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) and the breakaway
Association of Language Companies (ALC).

ATC desk research demonstrates poor productivity rates, and costs, of linguists employed by the EU prompting concern about the lack of a recognised European industry quality standard for translation companies

2000s
The EUATC, which the ATC is a member of, develop a CEN standard in the early 00s; then national mirror groups develop the European Translation Services standard, EN 15038, published in 2006, in whose development expertise ATC was instrumental

2010s
The work of the ATC on EN 15038 charts best practice processes involved in providing translation services through commissioning, translation, project management and quality control to delivery, paving the way for the worldwide ISO 17100 standard, published in 2015

2017 the ATC launches its own ISO certification service to help LSPs achieve the global standard

2018 ATC rebrands, with new membership categories created and the launch of its new website

Today
Around 30 per cent of the European Union’s translations are commissioned by Directorate General Translation (DGT) from privately owned language service companies across Europe, including the UK.

With English set to remain a key language in the EU, even after Brexit, UK translation companies will continue to benefit from the ATC’s pioneering campaigning
