I run an SEO agency and we deliver SEO audits for customers all the time. However, I have an issue with one where a single keywords (group of keywords) has dropped and won't rank on Google for their homepage.
We've carried out all the normal checks, keyword density, backlinks, page speed, technical issues, robots/canonical tags, duplicate content, etc. but can't get to the bottom of it.
The keyword(s) in question ranked consistently for their homepage high on page 1 from 2019 to 31st May 2021. Then a sudden drop and since, it has been hovering on page 2 until October 2022. From March this year, it's not even been in the top 50 search results. I see a similar pattern with all other related keywords.
Nothing major happened around that time that I can recall and very little work has been done other than on-site SEO. The strange thing is that all internal pages seem to be improving in ranking.
To further confuse matters, the page has always scored well on SurferSEO compared to the other page 1 competitors but over recent months we've made improvements and it now scores higher than any other page 1 competitor, yet it's still not showing any improvement.
Other internal pages where we've done the same SurferSEO optimisation work have all shot up in rankings.
It feels like a penalty or sandbox but I can't understand why or how to remove it.
Please let me know if interested. Top Cert SEO sellers only please who have specific experience overcoming this exact kind of issue.
