Description
I’m looking for a freelancer to build a modern, professional and mobile-friendly local events website for Whatsoninbrighton.com.
The aim is to create a website that becomes a go-to place for people in Brighton & Hove to find out what’s happening, where and when.
Main requirements
Homepage
* Clean, attractive and modern design
* Strong Brighton identity
* Featured/upcoming events
* Events organised by category
* Clear navigation
* Prominent search function
* Mobile-first design
Events section
I need an easy-to-use system where I can add and manage events myself without needing coding knowledge.
Each event should have:
* Event title
* Date and time
* Location/venue
* Description
* Category
* Image
* Price/free entry
* Website/ticket link
* Optional organiser information
Events should automatically appear in the relevant sections of the website.
Categories
Initially I would like categories such as:
* Music
* Comedy
* Food & Drink
* Theatre
* Family & Kids
* Sport
* Nightlife
* Festivals
* Markets
* Arts & Culture
* Things To Do
* Free Events
I want the categories to be easy to change or add to later.
Event submission
I would like a “Submit an Event” page where businesses, venues and event organisers can submit their events.
Ideally submissions should come to me for approval before appearing on the website.
Business advertising
I want the website designed with future monetisation in mind.
There should be an “Advertise With Us” page explaining that local businesses can advertise/promote their business or event on the website.
The website should allow for future advertising options such as:
* Featured events
* Sponsored listings
* Banner advertising
* Business listings
* Featured business of the week/month
I don’t necessarily need an automated payment system in the first version, but the website should be built so this can be added later.
SEO
Please include basic SEO setup:
* SEO-friendly URLs
* Page titles and meta descriptions
* Proper headings
* Sitemap
* Google indexing setup
* Fast-loading pages
* Mobile optimisation
*blog posts etc
The website should be structured with local SEO in mind, particularly searches relating to things to do in Brighton, events in Brighton, what’s on Brighton and Brighton & Hove events.
Social media
I will be promoting the website through social media, so I need:
* Social media links
* Social sharing functionality
* Proper preview images/titles when pages are shared
Important
I want the website to be easy for me to manage myself.
I don’t want to have to contact a developer every time I need to:
* Add an event
* Remove an event
* Change an event
* Add a category
* Change homepage content
Please recommend the most suitable platform/CMS for this project (WordPress or another suitable solution).
Design
I want something that feels like a genuine Brighton local brand, rather than a generic events template.
The design should be:
* Modern
* Simple
* Eye-catching
* Professional
* Easy to navigate
* Strong on mobile
* Built around the What’s On in Brighton brand
I already have ideas for the branding/logo and can provide these.
Future development
The initial website should be built with the possibility of expanding later into:
* Local business directory
* Paid business listings
* Event promotion packages
* Newsletter/email list
* Restaurant/nightlife guides
* “Things to do” guides
* Deals and offers
* User accounts
* Online advertising/payment system
For the initial project, however, I want to keep it relatively simple and affordable.
Please provide:
1. Your total price
2. Estimated completion time
3. Examples of similar websites you have built
4. Which platform/CMS you recommend
5. What is included in the price
6. Any ongoing costs I should be aware of
7. Confirmation that I will have full ownership/access to the website, domain and content after completion
I am looking for someone who can build a solid first version that can grow as the audience grows.

Hi
This is quite a big project, and obviously your budget is just a placeholder. But I don't want to spend a long time preparing a proposal without having some idea of your budget. Can you let me know the budget and I can tailor a proposal to that figure rather than waste your time and mine with a bells and whistles site that is beyond your initial budget.
Regards

Hi Andrew,
I’ve reviewed the brief and WordPress looks well suited to this, particularly as you want to manage events, categories and homepage content yourself while keeping the platform expandable for advertising and business listings later.
One question around the event workflow: once an event date has passed, would you like it to automatically disappear from upcoming listings but remain available in an archive for SEO, or should expired events be removed entirely?
Also, for organiser submissions in the first version, should submitted events simply enter a pending approval queue in the admin area, where you can review/edit them before publishing?
Best,

Hi Andrew,
Should event submissions include email confirmation and an admin review/edit step before approval?
Will you provide the initial Brighton events, or should we launch with the submission system ready for organisers to add them?
Thanks!
