Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Design details: We are have recently purchased a 20w solar PV Panel for use with a water pump and we are interested in developing a budget motorized frame to rotate the solar panel throughout the day to maintain peak power generation.
As we are already an importer of many products manufactured in China, we may consider whether the design can be used for mass production.
Considerations for the solar panel rotator would need to include, adaptability of the frame/ mounting to take a range of solar panel sizes - generally from 363 x 529 x 25mm up to around 1200 x 600 x 25mm, the rotator should be powered by the solar PV panel usually with a DC voltage output of around 17-20 volts, the solar panel should rotate back to East facing at the end of each day therefore would need a very small power storage capacity maybe using capacitors, ideally solar panels should be rotated in the vertical tilt and circular rotation i.e. two motors, but can just be circulator rotation with optimised PV panel angle for the cheapest budget version. Product also needs to be water/ weather resistant and be able to take wind loadings, so might need to be weighted down at the base.
In terms of making the design suitable for mass production, a small 20 watt solar PV panel can now be purchased for around £24, so really the simple single plane circular rotator design would need to retail for less then £20 really. This means, materials consideration, quick production fabrication, low cost but reliable enough components.
Do you think this is something within your expertise for you to have a go at producing some designs for us?
Regards
Mark Stevens
