Kitchen Cabinet light color spruce up

Hi, I have existing kitchen cabinets, They are quite dark colored. And I would like them to be changed into some light color . My house is French colonial and it has dark color wood beams and arches and hardwood. All pretty dark and the kitchen cabinetry is also dark brown, I am in the process of having the color changed to lighter color, That needs to be more reflective. but I just don't want a total white wash. The painters have already taken away the doors. to have them sanded. But before jumping into something too flat or too light. I would like to get some suggestions to make it interesting.
