YouK (youk.co) is an information and shopping portal for UK consumers who are environmentally-conscious and interested in supporting local communities, and UK jobs and public services. It covers every consumer market segment.
We have a story to tell regarding fish (there are many other potential stories in other categories). The UK exports 75% of the fish it lands, and imports 70% of the fish it consumes. We have been in contact with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), who promote such stats, discussing the resulting wastefulness and environmental impact. We want to show people that if they choose UK landed fish "they can lower food miles and carbon footprint; fresh fish can be tastier and better quality; good for the local economy; more choices; better traceability so you get what you pay for." (MCS, 2018)
The import/export imbalance is largely down to the fact that the UK lands lots of types of fish that doesn't necessarily get consumed in the UK, whereas there is high demand for fish that is traditionally consumed here. Consuming these types of fish can be more unsustainable and increase carbon footprint. Additionally, Salmon is both the UK’s most imported and most exported fish over the last five years exasperating the carbon footprint issue.
YouK is looking to produce slick infographic(s), suitable for sharing on social media, that tells the basic story that highlights the imbalance of imports and exports, the waste this causes and the environmental impact of it and what people can do to address them. YouK itself has a tool which takes users from the type of fish dish they want, through to the best local answers, based on the size of the catch and the MCS sustainability ranking of each fish type.
Our initial thinking is that a diagram/image with an info sidebar would be appropriate, but we are entirely open as to the best way to tell the story.
