I'm looking for a design for a book cover. The temporary title of the book is "Executive Job Search". I'm trying to come up with a more imaginative title! Any ideas much appreciated and of course the final title may inform the actual design of the cover and obviously needs to be incorporated in to the design. Others ideas for titles include:
Get that job! – The Step-By-Step Guide to Finding your Next Executive Job
Total Job Search - CVs, Networking, Job Applications, Interviews and Assessment Centres
The Complete Guide to Executive Job Search - CVs, Networking, Job Applications, Interviews and Assessment Centres
The Individual Approach to Executive Job Search - CVs, Networking, Social Media, Interviews and Assessment Centres
The technical specifications for the cover design (which should be a .jpeg file) and the size needs to be 6.125 inch wide x 9.25 inch high and at a high resolution, ideally 300 dpi.
I had thought initially of a rather dull photograph of a job interview with the book title superimposed on it, I’m afraid I’m not a designer! What I’m looking for is something a bit more original that will “sell” the book. Some people may see the book in a bookshop but many people these days see a book online (e.g. on Amazon) and they make a decision to buy based on the book description and the cover. It’s a really important factor in the success of the book. The book cover needs to really catch the attention and it also it needs to have some kind of narrative so that people will immediately “get” what the book is about. The target audience will be male or female, any age group from school leaver to middle age, most likely graduates, managers, Chief Executives, Finance Directors, Senior Investment Bankers, IT Directors and so on. These people will be sophisticated and will not want something frivolous (not to suggest that it would be”!). They will want to be re-assured that this is an interesting, serious, professional book that will really address their needs and help them get a job. The book is a step-by-step guide to help senior managers find their next job. It covers preparing a CV, Networking, Using Social Media (e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter) in your job search, and Preparing for interviews, Assessment Centres etc. I am an ex headhunter and the book is therefore very practical providing detailed models, frameworks and techniques to create a CV, make a pitch, write an application letter and answer interview questions. In terms of branding and style I want the book to look seriously authoritative as though it had been produced by a top five consultancy (e.g. Price Waterhouse or McKinsey) or maybe an authoritative guide by one of the broadsheet newspaper e.g. Sunday Times, Financial Times etc. I also want the book to appear absolutely cutting edge and up to date. A lot of these job search books were written several years ago and are rather stodgy and dated. This book on the other hand is “up to the minute” and the idea of using Facebook and Twitter in a job search is quite innovative. I wonder if the design might incorporate the LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter logo?? I’m not sure about any copyright issues with the use of the logos.
Having said that the design needs to be serious I do think that the potential readers might respond to something “alternative”. It needs to stand out and catch the attention. In terms of my personal preferences I quite like the designs used at this web site: http://www.chiumento.co.uk/web/
They are a bit alternative but this firm nevertheless has the same target audience – i.e. senior managers.
