Please see the attached example of two methods to calculate the area of a road.
I need to know the best or most accurate method between the two on the spreadsheet.
I need a mathematical explanation, preferably with a diagram to illustrate the difference between the calculated methods.
On the example -
Method 1 multiplies the length (from one to chainage point to the next) by the averaged width at those two chainage points. The sum at each chainage point (excluding 0) is summed to total the 1,730.98 m2.
Method 2 multiplies the total chainage (i.e. length) by the average of all the widths (all at once) to total the 1,752.36 m2.
As you can see, there's a 21.38 m2 variance between the methods, which over larger areas will become greater.
