Experience Level: Expert
This is the request to do the illustration/drawing of a geological process. Geological process is the monitoring of steam injection into subsurface.
Please refer to sketch provided. Please also refer to second file attached as an example.
In your illustration, at the surface there should be the following elements:
- mountains/hills, no snow, no trees. Brown-ish colours please.
- desert/sand/dunes. Yellow-ish colour for sand and dunes.

- few tanks that look like cisterns next to the well head. These should be quite detailed and miniaturised.
- At the top of smaller wells (observer seismic wells) there must be an illustration of a small black box which has a tag: “Data logger and battery”.
In your illustration, in subsurface there are following elements:
- main injection well with marking that it is a steam injection well, 1,500m in depth.
- There must be a darker element at the lowest section of the well, representing DAS sensor which is sitting inside the well.
- Observer seismic wells 50m deep.
- Dark orange dots at the bottom of observer seismic wells representing buried sensors.
- Sparks (shown as little stars in my sketch), which represent microseismic events (induced by steam injection).
- Acoustic waves propagating from microseismic events upwards to the sensors.
- Acoustic waves should be illustrated as semi-circles. Expanding upwards from the microseismic events becoming large in size towards the sensors. The colour to be used for acoustic waves is pink-ish.
- And the colour for the plume of steam injection to be blue-ish.
DOs and DON"Ts for this illustration.
- Different subsurface rock layers. They should be slightly curved, please refer to an example picture attached.
- The seal rock should be darker / black colour,
- The reservoir rock should be lighter colour, yellow-ish colour.
- Textures to be used should also be appropriate for subsurface. Please Google subsurface formation textures. Please refer to an example picture attached.
- Please use the perspective view, so the items that are further away from the viewer are smaller and the items closer to the viewer are bigger. It should look like a proper 3D sketch.
- Same goes for fading: objects which are further away and smaller should be a bit more faded. When drawing - either use smaller thinner lines for further way objects or fade a little so it's obvious from the viewer’s perspective - observer wells in the back are faded.
- We do understand that 1,500 metres of injection well and 50m of observer wells if put at a correct scale will be hard to see. Observer well of 50m will be impossible to see so it should NOT be up to scale. For illustration purposes let’s say the observe wells should be 25% size of the injection well in your drawing.
Purpose if your new drawing to illustrate that steam injection induces microseismic evens that can be detected by buried sensors in observer/seismic wells (at 50m depth).
