Description
Experience Level: Expert
I am looking to create an illustrated map of the northern section of the state of Michigan (in the U.S.A.) that focuses on one specific theme, like flora and fauna. The map will have an illustrated background with many different smaller illustrations that represent interesting places and things for visitors to see. I plan on marketing these maps to middle and high end tourists that visit this area every year during the summer. I would like it to be a useful map and a piece of art at the same time.
The map will be between the size of a large poster and a road map and will fold up. I would like it to be illustrated in a style that is similar to the illustrator Ray Troll. My ideal illustrator would be able to blend Troll's style with a mix of their own. Overall, on style, I am looking for an illustration that blends a cartoon style with an overall sense of realism. I would like it to have a vintage, textured feeling, not a perfect, clean, sterile feel. I am assuming that it will require mostly hand drawn illustration with some additional work using image software, but I am willing to listen to ideas that use a different medium.
To begin with, I am looking for an illustrator that feels like he/she would fit the project and be excited about developing it with me over a period of a few months. I would like to have the completed project done around March.
Since I am a first time poster, and I am not sure how much funding I will need for the work, I am posting a job for a designer or illustrator to work with me to create a general design/layout for my project. Below are the things I would like to have at the completion of this job.
*a small scale layout of what the final project will look like, including the portion of Michigan to be covered, the map's title, the text section, and a color pallet to guide the project.
*Three small example illustrations that represent the type of illustrations that will mostly cover the map.
*an estimate on the time and cost to create the project.
*a developing relationship with an illustrator that is a good fit for the project.
Details and Info:
I would like the final map to be about 4ft by 3 1/2ft. The exact size is not the most important feature and may change a little once illustration begins.
The map should have two main components: the map, covered in illustrations, and a text area that explains many of the special places/things on the map. Each place or major illustration will have a number or letter attached to it. In the text area, the corresponding number or letter will have a little write-up about the corresponding place or thing.
I believe there will be a lot of interest in this product and hope to develop a series of maps, either on the same theme in other regions of Michigan, or in the same region but based on a different theme.
I am attaching a few URLs for you to view to help give you a concrete example of what I am looking for. The 1st two URLs are the best to get a feel for my project. They are of a map of the state of Washington illustrated by Ray Troll. His is based on prehistoric life and fossils. My project would be very similar except it would be based on one region of Michigan and it would have a different theme. The last URL is to Ray Troll's website where you can get a better idea of his style of illustration if you are not familiar with him.

I would like to retain ownership of the three small illustrations created for this job to be used to further the project.
If you are interested, please send me a proposal. If you have examples of your style of illustration that would be a big bonus. I am fine with questions, as well. I will be checking back often-every other day or so. I look forward to finding the right person.
Thank you for your time.
