Information for the business: new product design
Design details: I would like to have a 3d and CAD design for a savings box for children, in accordance with the two sketches I have attached. The material is to be shiny, white, heaving plastic composite (similar to the iPhone material). The outside of the box is one piece and the lining of the box is also preferably one piece (with the luggage label included in the lining mould). Therefore, I am hoping to have just two moulds made for manufacture (one the entire outside of the box and another for the entire lining). The two should fit or clip together when assembled, firmly and smoothly.
The lid of the outside of the box will have photoprinted pretend British notes (£20, £10 and £5) on the top with our Queen's head replaced with the respective character attached in the third illustration. (Blue for £5, Brown for £10 etc. and I shall forward these illustrations to you, as soon as they have been completed for adding on to the top of the designed box.
The base of the lining will also hold a stack of pretend British notes and the dimensions must allow for a comfortable fit for these three notes. There should be three clips to hold the notes in place, as part of the lining mould. There should be space for a small compartment for coins, pencil sharpeners, etc. as well as a few colouring pencils as the £5 note is smaller than our £20.
The lid of the lining is to hold a stack of a dozen thank you cards and a dozen envelopes alongside each other, with a clip to hold them in place. These should hopefully also be part of the same mould for the lining.
The outside of the box is to be in shiny white and the lining is to be designed in four alternative block colours 1) Bright Red, 2) Blue to match our £5, 3) Brown to match our £10 and 4) Purple to match our £20. The colours should co-ordinate and match as best possible. Please include these alternative coloured linings as part of your portfolio for the design of the box so that I can take the portfolio to show buyers the different colours available.
I want the savings box to appeal to all young children, so I should like Arsenal Red and Chelsea Blue, for example, as well as purple and perhaps pink to appeal to girls and these colours should be evident in the CAD.
Ideas for the visual style: Glossy, good weight not cheap, elegant but interesting to children. Intended age group 4yrs - 10yrs.
Things to avoid: No rough edges or sharp corners or clips which will cut or hurt children's fingers.
Extra notes: My sketch is very simple so it could easily be designed to look more interesting - small round feet perhaps, or rounded edges, shaped sides etc. It must be dimensionally correct to accommodate the notes comfortably, appealing to children, look elegant and of a desirable quality, the colours should be as accurate as possible, packaging and storage means that the shape must be fairly easy to stack and store and I am hoping to get it manufactured in just two moulds (the whole outside of the box and the whole lining of the box including the luggage label as part of the lining). The lining colour should show from the outside in the form of piping, so as to identify what colour is inside and also improve the aesthetic look of a beautiful product. This is for children to add their name if they want to customise their box. The luggage label should also have a clip fitting so as to seal the box closed.
I appreciate that there will be some questions and I imagine that I will need to explain in more detail. Please do not hesitate to email me with your questions, alternative suggestions, etc. as this is a new product and I am hoping to produce something which is appealing to children, will look beautiful on their bedroom cabinets and also will have a great function. The thank you cards are especially attractive with a group of childhood friends all from mixed backgrounds which should mean that any child in the UK will be able to relate to the card and be happy to send it off to their Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents etc. If the design works, I shall be interested in a number of other designs and different variations on the theme.
I hope you enjoy helping me with this design and I look forward to hearing back from you, regards, Teresa
