Description
Experience Level: Expert
Project Overview and Context:
- I am creating a one-off, professionally designed family keepsake as a new-baby gift for my sister. She used to record imaginative audio bedtime stories for her nephews, and I have developed four of those stories into a book entitled The Adventures of Kitchen Island. The book is personal and non-commercial: it is not being prepared for a publisher or for public sale.
- There are a total of 4 books, and 34 chapters in total. There will be an image for each chapter and a cover image. All should be AI generated according to the detailed image guidelines in the manuscript.
Project Objective:
- Transform the completed manuscript into a beautiful, print-ready illustrated children’s book, then manage the process through to the delivery of one high-quality physical copy. The finished book should feel warm, timeless and gift-worthy, while preserving the stories’ original family voice and character details.
Scope of Work:
- Creative direction: Review the manuscript, consolidated illustration ideas and series illustration guidelines; propose an overall visual approach, book format and indicative page plan.
AI illustration:
- Generate, select and refine original artwork for the cover and interior, maintaining consistent characters, teddies, locations, props, palette and storybook style across all four stories. Artwork should be classic watercolour, in bright colours.
Book design:
- Design the cover and interior; place text and artwork; tidy up typography, spacing and hierarchy; and prepare an attractive, readable layout suitable for children and reading aloud.
Production preparation:
- Confirm final trim size, binding, paper and finish; complete image-quality and pre-press checks; and supply print-ready files that meet the selected printer’s specifications.
Printer selection and management:
- Research appropriate UK suppliers that can produce a single premium copy, recommend a supplier, obtain approval before ordering, submit the files and manage production and delivery.
Creative Requirements:
- The manuscript contains specific illustration ideas for each chapter and detailed consistency guidelines. Please keep the established appearance and relative heights of Monty, Rex and Wills and the correct pairing of each boy with his teddy.
- Develop a coherent visual language that feels as though one illustrator created every image.
- Allow for review checkpoints before producing the full set.
Deliverables:
- Full cost breakdown, including any third-party print costs.
- Visual concept for approval.
- Final cover and fully designed interior, including all approved illustrations.
- Print-ready PDF files for the selected printer, plus a lower-resolution review PDF and packaged editable source files.
- Ordering and delivery of one finished copy.

Hi Sarah
Could you please explain the type of characters in illustrations or share an example?
Thanks
