ABOUT OUR READERS
The Bulletin has about 110,000 subscribers. The majority of readers are likely to be therapists, educators, or healthcare professionals.
The Bulletin's content is of general interest for a readership that is interested in the brain, in mindfulness and other aspects of contemplative practice, and in practical methods for improving well-being and functioning in the world. Many of our authors offer contemplative perspectives without endorsing any particular spiritual tradition, though many of our authors and readers would identify as Buddhist, if asked.
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE: PRODUCTION
Content for each issue is organized in Google Drive. All text content is arranged in a Word doc. The designer's job is to lay out this content in InDesign using a pre-built template which contains branded fonts, background images, header cover graphic, and other static content blocks. The designer's role is to take the text from the Word doc, style it following existing conventions, choose representative images, then send the result as a PDF for review.
Styling involves arranging the text in a way that is visually appealing, paying attention to the words and the message. The Word doc may contain sections of text that are to be emphasized or highlighted in some way. For example, meditation practices or poems may be given a special background color, font style (choosing a secondary font from the branded fonts), or emphasis. The font face should follow the existing template as much as possible.
Examples of highlights can be seen in the following past issues:
http://wisebrain.org/wisebrainbulletin/WBB13.2.pdf (see page 4)
http://www.wisebrain.org/wisebrainbulletin/WBB12.4.pdf (see page 14)
http://www.wisebrain.org/wisebrainbulletin/WBB12.3.pdf (see pages 13 + 17)
There are certain content blocks that recur in each issue of the WBB - those include the Greetings block, the Wellspring block, the Perspectives on Self-Care block, and the Fare Well closing section. These can be positioned in different ways depending on the issue - for example, the block shape may change from rectangular to square if it works better with the copy.
* In general, the blocks should appear in the order above - Greetings, Wellspring, Perspectives, Fare Well (the latter content block should always appear at the end of each issue)
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE: IMAGES
Images should evoke feelings in the reader that are in line with the passage of text with which they appear.
1. We only use images that are in the public domain, royalty-free, and that do not require attribution. This post lists a lot of resources for finding images: https://buffer.com/library/free-images.
2. We convert the images to B&W to reduce the file size and to allow people that like to print the PDF version to do so without using up too much color ink (yes, believe it or not, some people actually print this thing!). Besides, the B&W makes it "moody" and given that this is a largely spiritual publication the aesthetic works.
3. Images of people should reflect diversity with regard to race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation/gender identity.
4. As you'll see from the example archived issues in this brief, we also use a lot of nature shots though try to focus on the less-cheesy type of landscape or meditation shots, and definitely avoiding anything that feels too "new-agey."
5. In general, we like to have an image every 2-3 pages so the Bulletin is not a wall of text. These are minimal requirements - if more images feel appropriate for certain sections, that's ok too, providing it doesn't add significantly to production time.
To get a sense of the aesthetic in terms of imagery, check out some recent issues which you'll find at the links below:

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE: DELIVERY
When the Bulletin is ready to send for review, please send as a PDF. I'll review and give feedback, and perhaps some revision requests. Once the Bulletin is in its final form, you can send it as a PDF, .idml, and .indd file, along with the images that you've used in each issue. To make this hand off easy, you may just want to upload those final files to the relevant folder on Drive and send the link.
REQUIREMENTS
Given the nature of the content, fluency in English is required. Also, the ability to followed detailed briefs like this one is essential.
