Description
Design details: Bring to life an existing detailed, layered Photoshop image of ancient naval battle formations -- triremes on the water. Expand and move 2D layers to produce animation effect and add some atmospheric an lighting effects.
Target audience: college students
Ideas for the visual style: graphic novel
Extra notes: ATTACHED is a JPEG of the final product, along with some suggested color adjustments that I'm not able to make myself in the AI file. This source product is not perfect but I think we can work with it. The question is, how much can you do with it? I originally was going to have the illustrator produce several illustrations, including one of triremes colliding with debris flying, but this first example took far too long. If I am to have the video ready for the first day of classes (Week of 21 AUG), I need to be editing on Friday 18 AUG. I also need to stay within budget of $300 for the whole video, and this first illustration alone cost me $50. It is in Adobe Illustrator (though I'd requested Photoshop, although AI is probably easier for an animator to use in the end), and it will need some touchup to make it look more graphic novel and less comic book. Here is a link that shows the effects I would like applied to the layered image: https://www.fiverr.com/live_explainers/animate-your-comic-book-illustration-and-artistic-images?context=collections&context_type=pre_defined_recent.ownership_true&funnel=8493b9f0-efb7-4713-99da-69da8ae68ceb . I am considering asking for someone who can both provide an additional illustration that makes use of the elements already in this one (for consistency and efficiency), and add the animation and atmospheric and lighting effects. That way I can have my moving triremes as you see (they should bob in the waves and appear to be on a collision course), and if at all possible a clip of two of these triremes crashing, with debris and all. The total video length needed is about 1 minute, preferably 1:20 for flexibility in editing.

Hi Matthew
Any references? What is your deadline?

Chris R.12 Aug 2017Great thanks
I'll take a look and see what can be done RE your requirements.

Dear Matthew,
Could you please provide any reference video link to understand the style you like?
Thank you,

Please show PSD.
Matthew F.12 Aug 2017It turns out, the illustrator used Adobe Illustrator instead of Photoshop. I have a draft of the layered AI source file now, and he is making a few adjustments. The effects will be important, especially as -- due to the nature of the illustration being provided to me -- it will need some touchup to make it look more graphic novel and less comic book. Hi Matthew,
Your project sounds really interesting, I just have a couple of questions.
Has the PSD image been made and what level of animation are you thinking i.e. do you want the oars moving and sails billowing etc? Many Thank JulesMatthew F.11 Aug 2017The illustrator is still completing the layered image, but I have seen a sample of the incomplete image and can post it if there is a way to do so. It contains sketched figures , hoplite soldiers on the decks of several ships that are prominent in the foreground and diminish in the background on active waters, moving in a direction to converge and collide. Although the artist is working in layers, it appears he is drawing contours and filling them with color, so that the water layer for instance is not completely filled in and may require an additional fill in order to animate over it. I can talk to him about that and suggest the water layers should be complete, without the contours.

Hi Matthew,
Can you share the image for measure work?
Thanks,

María T.11 Aug 2017Hi Matthew,
Thanks for the quick response.
If your illustrator can make a JPG or PNG of the image, you can upload it and all us can see it.
That will help us get an idea of what you need.
On the other hand, what output do you need, video?
Format, duration and size?
