Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Information for the business: IMVU
Industry: Entertainment
Design details: IMVU is a 3D dress-up chat game. My job is to provide 3D clothing models for players to wear. Please see attached images to get an idea of what these models should look like.
The regular price for models of this quality is $45 per model. They need to be lowpoly, properly weighed and well-textured. This is a fixed price, for easy and difficult models. We stick to fixed prices because we can buy up to 20 models a month. We have a few freelancers that have worked for us since 2009, sometimes we buy a model every few days, sometimes only two a month (depending on their schedule, it's a laidback collaboration). Our intention is to find someone that can keep making models for a long time.
Here's a quick breakdown of the workflow:
1. You build the mesh (lowpoly!). You can choose to do this in Maya or 3dsMax (version 2016 or older). Marvelous Designer is an option, however it causes the same problems with every model you make, so it gets pretty tiresome fixing the same issues over and over. Which program you use is of course up to you.
2. The mesh needs to move along with the avatar so you need to weigh it.
3. We'll need UVW and texture maps of the same quality as in the attached images. If you can't make a texture close to this quality, please do not apply for this job! Just building the model is not enough, it has to have good texture maps. You can use Photoshop, painting in 3D in Max seems to give good results and some of my colleagues use ZBrush. Whatever gives a good result!
4. Exporting to IMVU. I'll send you IMVU's exporter, it only works for Max versions 2016 and older. You'll export the model as .xmf (IMVU's format) and upload it into IMVU to test it. I will provide you with an IMVU account you can use. I'll help you to learn this process.
I'll tell you in advance that models always look better in 3dsMax! IMVU reduces the quality greatly, therefore you'll have to stick closely to the instructions I give you, IMVU has its own specific do's and don't's. Also be prepared for unexpected issues with your model in IMVU. IMVU avatars sit and stand in extreme poses, they hug and dance, they move a LOT so models have to be weighed perfectly.
5. Once you're comfortable with the workflow, all you have to do is send me the following by email:
- .max file
- .xmf file
- texture maps
- uvw maps
Once you've got the hang of it, I'll just send you pictures of models you can make, you send me the files and I pay you. Then you move on to the next model.
If you have questions about this job, don't hesitate to ask! Please don't send a proposal right away, I want to talk to you first to estimate if you can do the job. I will not reply if it's obvious you haven't read the job description.
