Description
Experience Level: Entry
I’m seeking an experienced non-profit consultant or charity sector advisor based in the UK to provide expert guidance on setting up a formal non-profit organisation.
I currently run a small local initiative that supports several community charities and undertakes fundraising to cover basic running costs such as fuel. I now want to formalise this work into a recognised non-profit organisation and need professional advice on the correct process, structure, and compliance steps.
This will begin as a one-hour consultation, with the potential for additional advisory work as the project develops.
Responsibilities
Advise on the most suitable legal structure for the organisation (e.g. CIC, CIO, or Charitable Trust) based on its activities and aims.
Outline the registration process with relevant bodies such as Companies House and/or the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
Explain the governance and documentation requirements, including constitutions, governing documents, trustees, and safeguarding policies.
Provide insight into ongoing compliance and reporting duties, such as annual returns, accounts, and public benefit requirements.
Recommend funding opportunities and grants available to new UK non-profits or community groups.
Offer general advice on financial management, transparency, and sustainable growth for a start-up non-profit.
Requirements
Proven experience in setting up or advising UK charities, CICs, or other non-profit organisations.
In-depth knowledge of UK charity law, governance standards, and Charity Commission regulations.
Experience helping small or community-based projects formalise their structure.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide clear, actionable advice for beginners in the sector.
Details
Duration: 1-hour consultation (with potential follow-up work).
Rate: Please include your hourly rate in your application.
Format: Online meeting (Zoom, Teams, or similar).
