Description
Project Description:
We’re looking for a commercially minded freelance data analyst to help us tackle a data challenge – understanding and improving the quality of our customer data so we can make smarter, more targeted business decisions.
We have a large customer dataset (approx. 48,000 records) which is currently unstructured and lacks depth. We want to work with someone who can review what we have, identify what’s missing, suggest meaningful segmentation and enrichment, and ultimately help us build a clearer picture of who our best customers are – and how to find more of them.
This project will suit someone who enjoys solving open-ended problems, has a strategic mindset, and is comfortable advising on how to improve data quality and usage from the ground up.
We need someone who can:
• Review our existing customer data and identify gaps, inconsistencies or quality issues
• Propose ways to categorise and segment customers (e.g. size, type, buying patterns)
• Enrich our data using reputable third-party sources to add attributes like business type, company size, and location
• Analyse behavioural data such as purchase history, frequency, order value, product range, and payment patterns
• Help us define what our “ideal customer” looks like and how different segments perform commercially
• Present clear recommendations and insights to help guide future sales and marketing activity
Key Areas of Focus:
1. Data Review & Structuring
• Assess the completeness and accuracy of our customer database
• Suggest a practical and useful way to categorise customer types (e.g. domestic, small contractor, large contractor, merchant, etc.)
2. Data Enrichment
• Identify and integrate GDPR-compliant external data sources to enhance our customer records
• Add relevant attributes such as:
o Business size / turnover
o Type of business
o Years trading
o Location
o Credit scoring (if available)
3. Behavioural Analysis
• Use our internal sales and order data to analyse customer activity, including:
o Lifetime value
o Repeat order frequency
o Range of products purchased
o Average order value
o Online vs offline buying
o Payment history
4. Insight & Recommendation
• Define what a high-value customer looks like
• Identify segments that are most valuable or have the most growth potential
• Provide a summary report and presentation with clear findings and suggestions for next steps
What We're Looking For:
• Strong experience in data analysis and customer segmentation
• Ability to work independently and advise on both data structure and strategy
• Comfortable with large datasets (Excel, Power BI, or similar tools)
• Familiar with third-party business data sources
• Strong communication skills – able to explain findings clearly and simply
• Based in the South East and available to attend on-site 1 day per week (West Sussex area)
Project Setup:
• Freelance / contract basis over a 4 week period
• 1-day, or half day per week on-site (East Grinstead, West Sussex) non-negotiable to get into the business with the team
• Remainder of work can be remote
• Start date: ASAP

Hi DK,
I have reviewed your job posting and would love to assist in analyzing and enhancing your customer dataset to drive smarter business decisions.
Please confirm if there are specific KPIs or business goals you’d like to prioritize in the analysis (e.g., customer retention, revenue growth, or acquisition strategies).
Do you have any existing tools or platforms (e.g., CRM, ERP, or BI software) that you’d like the analysis to integrate with?
Would you prefer a detailed dashboard for ongoing insights, or a one-time report with key recommendations and next steps?
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Best,
Anwar -
