Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Estimated project duration: less than 1 week
General information for the business: We're scientists who give scientific writing seminars for PhD students and postdocs
Geographical areas: Europe
Data to include: Our company runs scientific writing seminars for students and scientists in the natural sciences and engineering. For an upcoming advertising campaign, I need to create a list of the names, postal addresses and email addresses of the key contacts -- department heads or secretaries -- at top universities and research institutes in The Netherlands (I'll give a link to these below). I need someone or several people to go to the web sites of these places (I have uploaded a list to PPH), look around and find this information, which should then be entered into an Excel spreadsheet.
FORMAT: The format for returning the information should be: university and department or institute name in column A, name of the contact person in column B (Dr., if appropriate, followed by first name and last name, no commas), postal address in column C, and email address in column D.
I've uploaded the list of places along with their websites. The list is in the file called WAS_Dutch_Research.xls. The places are listed in column A and the web sites in column B.
The correct contact person, which is usually the institute Director or something similar, MIGHT be listed on the web page I've given. But in many cases, this will be the main web site, and you'll need to look around a bit to find the right contact. To illustrate, the web site (http://aissr.uva.nl/) for the first institute on the list – the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research – is the main web site for this institute. There is no director listed on this page. Under the title of the institute, however, you can see links to “staff” and “contact” among others. If you click on “staff” you'll find a page that lists everyone alphabetically over several pages. That doesn't seem so useful, as it is not obvious who is the director from this page. Alternatively, click on “contact” and you find a page that lists a number of secretarties, and then also Prof. Dr. A.P. (Anita) Hardon as the Academic Director. In this case, this is the person we want.
In some cases, you may not be able to find the head of an institute or the director. In that case, please instead give the details for one of their secretaries or a departmental or institute secretary.
Unfortunately, things will be a little different for every university or institute. Sorry about this. The overall tasks requires some flexibility and ongoing exploration. The key is to get an address and contact person, and an email address, for each department or institute on the list.
If any web site gets you completely confused, just email me and I will try to help. I've done this exercise for a few of these and have learned a little along the way.
