Description
Experience Level: Entry
General information for the business: New farmland business seeks mapping software
Data to include: I need help to find the right map making software. So initially I want a list made of all available software ( sometimes called GIS - Geographical Interface Software ).
Job 1 , Search and make a list of all links to software so we can look at them. Then Job 2 ( done as a second paying job), is to help us find the software which does the following. Our needs are VERY simple, but software we found either does not do what we need or is too complicated.
We want to FIND simple, entry level software, that can import Ordnance Survey purchased maps. We then 'cut up' agricultural fields into plots of various sizes and of any shape . So a 100 acre field can be cut into plots of 0.1 acres, 0.5 acres, 1 acre of any shape etc.
We need it to do TWO things. Cut an exact area. Show the coordinates.
The cutting process must be easy and show the AREA of the plot. The best way we have found is to have a large plot and slide a cutting line across the plot.
As you slide, the size of the piece cut is shown on screen, so you can stop when you have 'cut' the exact area you want. ( the wrong way is to make a shape and keep moving the nodes until you get the area you need - its too slow and hard to get exact).
Then we need to show at the corners of each plot the map coordinates. We use the map generated ( printed out) to send to the Land Registry who then enter the plot onto their computerized mapping software. If we can supply the coordinates, then the plot boundaries are accurately entered. So that's the problem, to find software that EASILY cuts plots of exact size AND shows the coordinates of each corner of the plot. We have found software by Pear Technology ( PT Mapper) , which almost does the job. But not quite. It does not show the coordinates of each corner.
Extra notes: SUMMARY The final map we create is that of a big field, cut into many smaller pieces, but with exact map coordinates of each plot shown ( or readily seen) when printed out.
Job 1 is just to compile a list of all the mapping software you can find. I guess a couple of hours will do it.
Then let me have the web links to all the sites. ( NB avoid maps which are for games / fantasy maps).
Job 2, can be done as a separate paying event after (if you want). I only mention it so you can see the reason behind the search. This can be £50 to open some demos and try them and find the software we need.
