What the Freelancer needs to start the work

• Topic and angle — not just “write about tenancy law,” but the specific question or slant, e.g. “a guide for landlords on ending a tenancy correctly.”
• Audience — who’s reading it? The general public, other solicitors, small-business owners? This drives how much you explain versus assume.
• Word count — so scope and price are clear.
• Purpose — a blog post to attract readers, an explainer to inform clients, SEO content to rank? Each is written differently.
• Deadline — confirm it fits your revision schedule before agreeing.

For legal work specifically, two extra things matter:

• Jurisdiction — England and Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland? The law differs, and this is the single most important thing to pin down. Only accept work in areas you can write accurately; it’s completely fine to say a topic is outside your scope.
• Whether it’s information or advice — you’re writing general legal information, not tailored legal advice for someone’s specific situation. Make clear you’ll include a standard “this is general information, not legal advice” disclaimer, like the one on your samples. This protects both you and the client.
