I have lots of experience, ranging from cleaning up audio for features during my time in BBC radio to restoring recordings of Rudyard Kipling from 1933 for the National Trust.
What I do:
- Remove hiss
- Remove hum
- Remove crackle
- Remove white noise
- Fix levels
- EQ
- Add compression or other processing if required
What I don't do:
- Leave nasty, audible "artefacts" in the file as a result of cheap software and poor technique
- Give you false expectations about what can be achieved in terms of good audio repair and restoration
