How I work — no guessing:
- Read the actual server and PHP error logs first. A 500 error is a symptom, and the log names the cause: a fatal PHP error, exhausted memory, a broken module or plugin, a bad .htaccess, wrong file permissions, a corrupted cache, a failed update, an incompatible
PHP version, or a database connection that's gone
- Take a full backup before I change anything
- Fix the root cause instead of disabling things at random until something loads
- Verify the whole site afterwards, not just the homepage: admin, checkout, cart, contact forms
- Send you a short written report — what broke, why, what I changed, and how to avoid it next time
