My plan of attack is usually:
1) Chords and Atmosphere/Effects planning for the entire segment (stage 1).
2) Complete half of the assignment, receive feedback.
3) Based on the feedback, make necessary changes to complete other half.
I've applied this method successfully on previous projects I've had, and it's never failed me.
