    • Founder of a successful media company
    • Experienced journalist and news editor
    • Screenwriter
    • Translator

I work as a German/French/Italian to English translator for major corporations, primarily media companies.

My background is the media. I sold the forward planning agency Advance Media Information (AMI) to Precise Media Group in December 2007 and have a national press and broadcasting background stretching back 25 years. It covers everything from war reporting to women's magazines.

I occasionally do copywriting for marketing campaigns, but my day-to-day focus is language and words: finding the story in a text and crafting it into concise, punchy copy (within the constraints of providing an accurate translation!)

My other passion is screenwriting. I have just completed a second feature film script that has been optioned, and am developing other projects for TV.

Having run a larger company for a decade, I understand the importance of excellent customer relations and always strive to give added value to any work I undertake.

My years as a reporter and editor also give me an edge when it comes to painstaking research and accuracy.

I love the flexibility and variety my work offers and prefer to focus intensively on projects.

I am always committed, always professional, and always deliver on deadline.

    Area Covered: Translation, screenwriting, copywriting
    Work Experience Summary: 2007- present
Translator: corporate press releases, film scripts, editing company reports and website content for a wide variety of major international companies and the German federal government.

    July 1997-Dec 2007

Founder & Editorial Director, Advance Media Information Ltd (AMI)

AMI was a forward planning agency providing comprehensive information about future events across a wide range of sectors.

I was responsible for the entire content of the databases – researching data, managing editorial teams, editing their work, client relations.

One of the keys to AMI’s success was my news judgement – the ability not only to identify which forthcoming events will make the headlines from a mass of information, but also which angle is most likely to appeal to specific media organisations. This skill of being able to understand and deliver targeted information to a client was later transferred to a wide range of business sectors.

Starting at the proverbial dining room table, I used my media connections and the quality of the new product to sell AMI to the likes of ITN, BBC, CNN, Sky, The FT, The Times & Daily Telegraph. This was achieved without start-up capital, and despite strong opposition from established competition.

Having acquired a blue chip client list, we raised major VCT investment in 2000, established an office and employed 36 people. I then launched a range of products aimed at
    • Government (Downing Street press office, Cabinet Office, Foreign Office)
    • PR (Ogilvy, Citigate Dewe Rogerson, Freud, Fishburn Hedges)
    • Financial and corporate (Ernst & Young, British Gas, Microsoft, O2, Vodafone)
    • Entertainment (ITV, GMTV, Blue Peter, CBBC)

We persuaded giants such as Dow Jones & S&P to form partnerships, supplying them economic and corporate data.

Latterly, I set up a U.S. version of the service, partnering with the Associated Press.

AMI, by now a profitable company attracting a series of industry buy-out bids, was sold to Precise Media Group on Dec 14 2007, when I took the option to cash in and exit.

    1996-97
    Forward planning editor, Talk Radio
I co-created and ran the forward planning diary for the national 24-hour speech radio station.
I was required to come up with fresh programme ideas daily, briefing celebrity presenters and producers, and providing research for a very wide range of formats.

    1985-1996
    Freelance reporter
I started by specialising in backgrounders to forthcoming murder trials at the Old Bailey, persuading detectives and victims to give me stories and photographs for post-trial exclusives.

A string of high profile splashes drew the attention of news editors and I began regular shifts (The Sun, News of the World, Today, London Daily News, Mail on Sunday, Thames Television and Sunday People) working as a general reporter as well as carrying out undercover and investigative work.

To survive as a freelancer in such a competitive environment, I had to become adept at originating my own stories, moving faster and more effectively than the rest of the Fleet Street pack. It was also essential to establish and maintain a reputation for reliability, accuracy and all-round professionalism.

A decade of freelancing allowed me to experience a wide variety of work including:

    • ‘Crimewatch’ style weekly magazine pullout for the Sunday People
    • 6 months at the Daily Telegraph and The Australian in Sydney
    • War reporter in Bosnia
    • Women’s magazine feature writer, mainly for H Bauer, where I became one of their main suppliers of ‘real life’ human-interest articles.

    1984-85
    Reporter, Central News
I began as a court reporter at the Old Bailey, eventually covering all London courts, before moving into general news.
