    Work Experience
    -----------------

    Job Title: Architectural Planning Technician
    Company: Wallop Projects
Description: Current Freelance Projects new business new website to follow:

Over the past 2 years my professional work has been active servicing local clients, Architects in Southampton and Romsey.
Planning Application work in the local area has seen the involvement of a variety of special disciplines for progress to be achieved in the object of gaining planning consents. In this area much of the project work includes: listed buildings; conservation areas; woodlands and flood plains. The required specialist professional input for relatively small scale planning proposals includes: Arboricultural consultants; Ecology consultants; Structural engineers; Environment Agency, County
Ecologist and Energy efficiency consultants. These have played a vital role in the success of the planning applications.
Examples of typical projects: Conversions of farm buildings; new village hall Nether Wallop; extensions; annexed accommodation in the countryside; new garages / outbuildings and manor house restoration with internal alterations.

Planning Design Technician: Tetlow King Ltd 2008-2009
Working in a different gear, high pressure, fast turnover, designing housing on a large scale, serving large house builder clients was a new experience. Working in teams using AutoCad for planning application related work on house designs and new public / community buildings in the south.
As part of the team my sketch design work was delegated to the CAD technicians that involved imparting basic architectural detail knowledge for planning presentation in line with the project design code.
Continued Professional Development seminars for The Code For Sustainable Design and visits from other alternative energy consultants became a regular ritual. These highly informative and up to date presentations of the latest products, engineering solutions and energy choices contributed to the evolvement of my design ethics and in parallel with the companies forward moving design code and ethos.
This work was halted in the downturn due to the inevitable slow down in land acquisition where all our main clients had to stop operations.

Planning Design Technician: Pro Vision Planning and Design From 1998-2008
The combined forces of Planners and Architects at Pro Vision have proved to be a formidable force with a high success rate in the turbulent market. My traditional architectural approach to design and presentation promoted a fair share of company profile from its infancy for 10 years.
Computer aided design (VectorWorks) revolutionised my work allowing me to switch between the digital and traditional mediums when suited. My pen and ink graphic can be emulated using my own technique in CAD. Also traditional pen ink drawings are easily scanned into CAD for presentation purposes giving my work a unique quality with electronic versatility
The early sustainable design code BREEAMs in 2007 that became mandatory for new builds was a turning point in my view of credible design. The rating standards conditioned my approach to planning and production information that was required in traditional construction.
Landscape planting planning became a familiar discipline for planning applications with a variation of schemes from basic to high brow scheme design. This was achieved in-house and working in collaboration with other professionals. This skill became an asset to the company.
Care home design in planning and production work became a familiar preoccupation of the companies" effort to broaden its discipline. This type of work mainly included assistance with planning applications, that enriched my experience with this sector.

Architectural Technician: Robert Adam Architects 1997-98
During this period I became familiar with various classical buildings and the associated detailing for the top end of the housing market. My experience was further enriched in this area of design and detail working for wealthy clients and developers in and around the London Area.

Planning Design Technician: Peter Borchert Design 1996
In Wiltshire this small company provided a change, working directly with Peter Borchert an idealistic architectural design consultant and developer who chose his clients carefully. These small to medium sized developers were orientated towards traditional materials and authentic detail design. This type of development mostly in conservation areas provided a niche in the housing market requiring older vernacular style housing without the inherited crankiness, a bridge between modern
    development and listed buildings.

My contribution to the business supported all the necessary planning related exercises / correspondences, applications and liaison with various consultees to the LA. The ensuing design work lead to the advancement and presentation of the drawings. These consisted of hand drawn pen & ink plans including perspective sketches and watercolours that strictly portrayed the ethos and image the company was promoting at the time.
The company approach to the building regulation application drawings were worked up using the same traditional medium. The necessary advancement and additional detail for tendering purposes

had a sense of urgency that enabled me to work under pressure to reach the agreed deadlines. The working drawings combined with the use of national building standard specifications broadened my knowledge of the production information that became a routine part of exercise in the preparation of contract documents.

My supporting participation in this phase of the projects and involvement with overseeing some of the construction work, gave me a coordinated approach to some of the problem solving issues that often arose with the necessity to adapt construction detail. My experience broadened at the time which, developed a new sense of self reliance with both keeping ahead of construction technology, contractual procedures and working with the other professionals and parties of the contract.

Over this year the company image and reputation to create authentic buildings was boosted, won awards and was acknowledged by the Local Authorities and estate agents to have increased the value of the local area.

Architect`s Assistant: Dreweatte Neate, Winchester 1988-96

Through this traditional practice of Surveyors, Architects and Estate agents; my introduction to planning and design started with working for farming estate clients across the south.
Many land and building surveys where carried out using basic measuring equipment and the drawings set up in an old fashioned drawing office with pen & ink / tracing paper and dyeline printing. Starting in this way my appreciation of the detail in: Agricultural buildings, farm houses, cottages, generated a special interest in the local vernaculars, the design of higher status manor houses. Seminars on Historic building fabric restoration / Visits to Open Air Museum at Singleton sparked an interest in historic buildings.

Generally the office work involved the preparation of the drawings and documentation for Planning / Building Regulation Applications. Much of the credibility in the design work for these restoration or new build projects relied on experience gained from producing working drawings / construction details. Further to this perspective illustration and sketching became an additional valuable asset to the business which introduced potential schemes to clients and supported planning applications.

The company sponsored my part time professional education in Southampton to study Building & Construction / Architecture to obtain the necessary qualifications to become an Architectural Technician. In parallel to this, working in the field allowed me to advance my experience in Planning and Building Regulation practice. Working with clients, building contractors, planning professionals and the Local Authority.
