Description
Experience Level: Entry
Estimated project duration: 1 - 2 weeks
SCOPE OF RESEARCH ARTICLE:
Background Review
-Gas produces about 25% less carbon dioxide per unit of energy when burned than oil and much lower other pollutants.
- Relatively cheap and abundant.
- Newly globalized business means it can quite readily be transported worldwide. Regasification Unit and how they have greatly improved transportation.
- Gas can generate electricity; fuel cars, lorries and ships either directly or by charging batteries; heat homes and drive industries; and be converted to petrochemicals. (BP statistics annual review can compare in Million Barrel of oil equivalent (BOE).
- Major Middle East producers’ gas reserves life at current production rates exceeds their oil reserves life.
- Middle East countries plan to find, produce, transmute and export more Gas.
- NOCs are pivoting in the direction of the big international firms such as Shell, Equinor and Total, which now produce as much or more gas than oil.
- With ever-growing concerns over climate change and predictions of “peak oil demand” in the 2020s or 2030s due to the rise of electric vehicles, gas seems a safer bet.
Project Objectives
- In-depth primary research on the future of gas and its potential competitiveness with oil.
- Where will the competition occur? Which countries and areas of the world.
Project Body: Research
- Comparison of major oil exporters gas reserves with oil reserves in Million Barrel of oil equivalent.
- National Plans and policies for the future of gas (Major Exporters of Oil and Gas Countries).
- Organizations plans for the future of gas. (Major O&G Companies)
- Comparisons of gas and oil predictions and Outlooks (Sky Scenario, BP, Total etc).
Possible Conclusions and Recommendations
- Gas is no longer seen as a transition fuel. Perspective has changed due to the size of the reserves, environmental advantages and transportation costs.
- Countries now have a portfolio approach to their energy mix, with gas playing a prominent role with renewables going forward (Sometimes greater then renewables).
- Comparison of countries portfolios highlighting the findings “if gas is set (or not) to compete with oil”.
