Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Word Count: 900 words
We publish a magazine for people leaving the Armed Forces.
We know many Service-leavers struggle with their mental health but have
never accessed support before. Some of this issue is down to stigma, while there’s also an
issue about awareness and where to get good quality, confidential advice and support.
This article serves as a starting point towards understanding what’s available and how to
get it.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
Please include:
Activities of leading mental health charities/organisations, with specific Forces
focus. You should look at: Help for Heroes (Hidden Wounds), PTSD Resolution,
Combat Stress, SSAFA and Veterans’ Gateway.
What does the NHS offer for Veterans with mental health issues? They are Armed
Forces Covenant signatories – special arrangements for ex-Forces personnel.
Sources of advice for retaining and regaining good mental health (in general, not
just Forces-specific).
………………………………………………………………………………………………
Please note:
Please use any relevant stats, facts or figures – but make sure that they are
properly sourced.
Introduce your piece with a ‘lede’ paragraph of one or two sentences.
Keep paragraphs simple and compact (65 words max).
Make your point quickly. Who, what, when, where and how? These facts need to
be in the first portion of your submission.
Write to the reader. Our audience is made up of Service-leavers from the British
Armed Forces – and their families.
Keep language informal but stick to accepted forms of usage. Steer clear of text speak and of overusing
exclamation marks and hyphens etc.
Keep it positive. We exist to inspire our readers and empower them with
‘answers and solutions’.
Add any helpful information (at the end of your submission) such as telephone
numbers and web addresses of organisations relevant to the subject you have
written about. (Please no hyperlinks – they do not work in a printed publication.
Use reasonably short web URLs starting with www.)
Our readers will be well aware of general help available to the as Service-leavers
and Veterans. You do not need to add this information.
Add any interesting/related facts, styled to small boxouts.
