I can help you update and safely migrate your Discourse forum to a new DigitalOcean droplet following DigitalOcean best practices.
Since your current droplet is running an 8-year old Ubuntu version, the correct approach is exactly what you mentioned: deploy a fresh droplet, install the latest supported Discourse build, migrate the forum data, and validate everything before switching DNS.
Here’s how I will handle it (clean + safe):
Create a new DigitalOcean droplet with a supported Ubuntu version
Install Docker + Discourse properly (official Discourse method)
Backup and migrate your full forum (database + uploads + config)
Restore the forum on the new droplet and confirm all features work
Test login, posts, emails, plugins, and performance
Switch domain/DNS with minimal downtime
Keep the old droplet as a rollback option until everything is confirmed stable
What you will get:
i. Updated Discourse forum running on a secure OS
ii. Smooth migration with minimal downtime
iii. Clean setup that is easy to maintain moving forward
iv Verified working forum before final cutover
I’ve handled server migrations and Linux-based deployments before, and I understand how important it is to avoid broken uploads, missing posts, or downtime during the move.
If you’d like, I can start immediately.
Can you confirm if your Discourse is currently installed using Docker (standard Discourse install), and if you have a domain connected?
