Description
Experience Level: Entry
TASK:
Write me an AutoHotKey (AHK) v2.0 script to temporarily disable and re-enable my laptop's internal keyboard.
WHY:
I work from coffee shops a lot but I hate my laptop (LG Gram 16)'s internal keyboard. I type long documents and my fingers get sore due to short key travel. I have a cheap Bluetooth keyboard that I love. So I need a way to quickly disable my laptop's internal keyboard so I can place my Bluetooth one on top of it when I'm working from coffee shops.
WHAT:
I'd like an AHK script I can set to auto load at startup with following behaviours:
- When I press key combination (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + L) it locks the internal keyboard only EXCEPT for the Ctrl + Alt + L.
- When I press key combination again it unlocks internal keyboard.
- It is important that I can still press the key combination on internal keyboard even if it is locked (e.g. in case my external keyboard runs out battery)
- When script loads (e.g. after reboot) it automatically unlocks keyboard
- I'd like to be able to easily set key combination in script to whatever I want
- Reasonably easily transferrable to other laptops with a "how-to" e.g. swap out keyboard's hardware ID in script for another, instructions where to find new keyboard's hardware ID etc.)
Why AHK?
- I already use it for certain keyboard shortcuts.
- Common Google advice for disabling keyboard is through Device Manager > Keyboards > disable. However LG have disabled this option for internal keyboard.
- There are a couple of software solutions that lock all keyboards - that doesn't work for me.
NOTES:
- I do not want to install DevCon.exe
- I've gone back and forth for an hour with ChatGPT & Copilot trying to get it to write a functioning script. They keep throwing errors. I've given up as I'm not an AHK/scripting expert and I don't have time for trial and error. For same reason I need a tested, finished script that'll work first time, every time - do NOT send me something without testing it thoroughly on different systems first. I DO NOT want to go back and forth with you bug fixing.
- Here are screenshots of my Device Manager > Keyboard (with all other external USB/bluetooth keyboards disconnected) - you might need.
- Short, clear simple instructions for adapting script for other laptops (I anticipate it would involve getting HID for laptop internal keyboard from Device Manager and pasting it into script)
- Let me know what further info you need.
This is a fairly basic ask - it may take someone with AHK expertise as little as 20 mins.
