Website optimization for iPad & iPhone viewing

I have recently had a bespoke e-commerce website developed for me using PHP. I need it optimised for viewing on IPad & also IPhone. I need someone that is quite proficient and has experience in this field to advise me accurately on the best thing to do.

I know for long term use I should have an actual iPad app & iPhone app developed but in the short term I want to see if my site can be optomised?
