General information for the website: old entries we remove are still showing up on search
Description of requirements/features: Hello
We have a number of older titles that are officially out of print (OP) and are no longer available for ordering (even as print on demand). A number of these listings were already disabled on our print book website; others were not.
Note that we have discussed several approaches to products that are no longer available, and the treatment may be different, depending on the title. Ideally, we would leave up titles that are not available (and do not have new editions) but do have ebooks and point the users to those specific ebook pages.
For now, I have been disabling the entries on our print book website for books that are out of print, because I have found that you CAN order them by clicking on the product summary screen of our print book website that comes up when you search for the title, even when the product is NOT shown as available on the individual product Web page.
For instance, this book shows up upon searching for it, and I can add it to my shopping cart and go all the way through checkout:
When you click on the entry, this is what shows up:
So you cannot order the print book at the product page but you can order it at the summary page. I see that credit cards are not charged until books are shipped, but a customer should not be able to order a book that does not exist with the expectation that they will receive it.
1) Is there a workaround so that if a book is shown as “out of stock” (not “out of stock-available for order”) that it cannot be ordered in this fashion? Does this require a separate step so that it appears somehow noted as “out of stock” or “not available” on the summary screen (rather than available to be purchased with one click)? If so, please provide me with these directions, and I will go back and reinstate some of these products as needed (for instance, those that point to new ebook versions).*
2) If not, instead of the user getting a message “Your search returns no results” can we change the “default message” for any book that is “out of stock” where the website listing is disabled so that if someone searches for it, they will get a message that reads something like this (this wording might be changed later if we go this route):
“The product you searched for is not available.
To search for another edition, if available, or related products, click here.
To visit our ebookstore to check for related ebook products, click here.”
*Note that if we are to leave these books as “disabled,” I will make the corresponding changes on our ebookstore site to not point to these disabled pages.
