Automatic Email confirmation needed when a customer placed an order

General information for the website: We are working on a site that sells audio products.
Description of requirements/features: Recently our basic Magento function of customer receiving an order confirmation has failed and I wonder if it is something you can fix. Basically the customer is no longer receiving confirmation emails from us when he/she make an order.

To further elaborate, Order confirmations do work manually in Magento, so if I go into the actual order and press send email (to send an update) the recipient and the email attached to the site get notified about the order. It's just the automatic email that doesn't get sent when the recipient physically presses order, likewise our email no longer get the message like it used to. I even installed a new order extension that claims to fix the issue but to no avail. I need someone to help me fix this. Thank you
