Script could be written that talks to the database

Hi , I'm a friend of Lego's and I'm a java/mysql developer. I'm trying to help Lego with his move but I don't know the technologies, so I've suggested that he go to someone like yourself for help with moving his database. I wanted to explain the situation as I understand it, so that we can be clearer about what needs to be done..

The problem is this:
Lego has the .aspx code, in fact all the code of the website, but I don't think he has access to the database. So moving the code to another provider should be easy, but the problem is how to move the database.

One thing I can think of is - he does have ftp access to the website, so presumably, a script could be written that talks to the database, and that script could be uploaded to the website and then it could give us a snapshot of the database - perhaps there is a MS SQL query like 'describe table' or something that will tell us the design of all the tables. Then we can rebuild the database?

The problem is that the person that developed this website is very territorial, and it was hard to get access to the code. I think we would have problems to get a backup of the database from him.

Does that make sense and what do you think would be the best strategy for getting a copy of the database?
