Description
Experience Level: Expert
Our requirement is to develop an application that enables us to make database structure changes to an operational Microsoft SQL database in a safe and repeatable manner. The logical steps that we have envisaged are:
1. To present a list of relevant tables for the user to choose from
2. To present a list of fields for any table selected
3. To allow the user to optionally make changes to the definitions presented
4. Once the changes have been made then to save them and commit the changes to the DB.
We recognise that there are a number of DB constraints and it will be up to the developer to ensure the integrity of the database and to ensure that the DB is left in a useable condition on completion of the process.
Assumptions:
1. The Database is Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (currently). It is possible that other databases may be used in the future.
2. The Database is a collection of SQL Tables, Stored Procedures & Views (currently only tables are used but this may change in the future)
3. The tables can exists in any MS SQL Instance in any MS SQL Database
4. The tables in the database we are concerned with all have a specific prefix in order that they can be easily identified and are differentiated from other table that may exist in the database. The prefix should always be set in capitals and separated from the table name by a ‘_’ symbol. (for example XXX_demo_data).
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Technical & Product Skills
• MS SQL Server 2008
• SQL query building and report writing
Experience
• At least 3 years of SQL code development
• Demonstrable record of delivering against tight timescales and budgets
• Wide understanding of commercial goals, direction and how technology can support these objectives.
Competencies
• Communications - making oneself understood, sharing information and listening. Must be able to translate technical concepts into business language.
