ARCGIS. Brief
For each scenario outlined below you should provide one map, any data you deem necessary (e.g. graphs etc), and a written commentary of no more than 300 words (one double spaced A4 sheet.) You don’t need to provide details of every single local authority but rather give and overview of the areas you identify, highlighting individual cases only when you feel it is necessary.
Scenario 1 - Spatial Policy Targeting
The government has introduced an employment programme called Self Start, which is designed to target those areas where entrepreneurial activity is low and unemployment is high (rather just apply the policy to every area of the UK). As a starting point, they need to identify and profile all areas of the UK where unemployment is greater than self-employment. It is your responsibility to identify and profile these areas, including some
Commentary on their spatial distribution.
Scenario 2 • Transport Planning Decision
Despite the governments stated commitment to green issues, they have decided to upgrade one major motorway to four lanes in each direction by 2020. They are currently trying to decide between the M1 and the M6. Your task is to identify and profile at an aggregate level all areas that intersect each motorway and then extend the analysis to include local authorities that are within a 30 mile distance of each motorway. Finally you must recommend which motorway you believe the Department for Transport should recommend for upgrading, based primarily on population related statistics. Geographic data for your chosen local authority is available from http://edin.ac.uk/ukborders/access/
Scenario 3 • Future Development Site
The government are keen to remedy any strategic oversights in the provision of transport infrastructure. Consequently they wish to earmark highly populated local authorities (more than 100,000 residents) that are more than 25 miles from a motorway or major airport, for future development. Using these criterion, which local authority do you recommend for airport expansion and motorway provision? Provide area profiles and analysis as necessary.
I can provide relevant data sets if needed. More information about criteria will be made available to winning bidder.
