Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
General information for the website: simple brochure website
Kind of development: Customization of existing website
Description of requirements/features: ourenergycompany.com.au.gridhosted.co.uk
On first look it appears the CMS has been over-complicated, there is a lot of user input when there really doesn’t have to be.
Pretty much all of the functionality required for this site is already part of the template but has been overlooked in favour of the Custom Post UI & Advanced Custom Fields. The Testimonials & Staff custom post types are already part of the Flintriver theme.
ACF has also been used for the banner image, testimonial selector, related page selector and again all of that is part of our theme. I’d have expected the Mockingbird functionality to have been duplicated, one for Related Testimonial and one for Related Pages. Same with the banner image, one for the main image and one for the small image. Mockingbird is already set up to inherit the related page title, text, link and featured image. With this automated process it removes the need for the client to have to manually apply all of this – our clients have always commented how simple our set up is and we really want to keep this up.
I’m actually not sure there’s any need for ACF to be used at all on this site, as I said, everything is already there and the other bits it has been used for i.e. the news page, I’d have expected the categories to be displayed by default on an archive page? And the list on the offer page, I don’t see why the list can’t just be added to the main text area? It just seems to have a heavily reliance on ACF which I feel makes the CMS over complicated.
Regarding the template itself, the CSS is a bit all over the place with various files referenced more than once and referenced from more than one file. For example, fr-reset.css and Font Awesome are referenced within the style.css file via @import (which is ideal) but then they are referenced again in the header, along with the other CSS files.
Bootstrap is also being loaded twice. fr-reset.css is basically our lite version of Bootstrap. If Bootstrap is required then fr-reset.css shouldn’t be used and vice versa.
It also appears that each individual page has it’s own template. This isn’t sustainable, when the site grows it means we’re going to have to create individual templates for those pages. I wasn’t involved in the design but taking a look at it, I’ve identified that there is a clear parent style and child style. For me, the best method would be to create a template which is automatically applied to parent pages and another which is automatically applied to a child page. In saying that, to provide flexibility, I’d still like to see the template selector in the CMS as we may have to override some pages – again, for me it’s all about keeping it as easy as possible for the client.
Pagination is broken, http://ourenergycompany.com.au.gridhosted.co.uk/our-industry-news/ showing 3 pages when it should only be 2. We added a post the other day but it’s coming in with the 23rd of April as the post date.
Specific technologies required: wordpress, css, html, javascript
Extra notes: has to be delivered no later than 18th May 2017.
Updates as each item is complete need to be fed back for testing through the process, not left until the end.
